Speech & Language Therapy
The Speech & Language Therapy Service is available to give help and advice to anyone who has a communication or swallowing difficulty.
Communication
Communication problems can be difficulties in any of the following:
- Understanding what is being said
- Speaking
- Reading
- Writing
- Voice
The Speech & Language Therapist can advise on how to achieve the best communication and where appropriate, offer therapy to improve communication as much as possible.
Swallowing
In some cases, people may have difficulty swallowing food and drink due to the location of the cancer or as a side-effect of treatment.
If swallowing problems arise, the Speech & Language Therapist may recommend specific techniques, exercises or changes to food/drink textures that make eating and drinking as easy, safe and enjoyable as possible.
The service is available to both inpatients and outpatients attending the Beatson.
